Emmy The Great – Dinosaur Sex

‘’Leaves are always falling from the trees, I think see my future in the leaves.’’

Emma Lee Moss AKA Emmy The Great is back with her sophomore album – Virtue, and from first impressions, it’s a stunner. She clearly hasn’t been dormant since releasing her critically acclaimed debut title First Love in 2009, an album that I instantly fell head over heels with. The second offering from the singer/songwriter is darker and broodier yet still has the characteristically catchy remnants of ‘First Love’. It sounds much more polished and developed with umpteen literary references.  Comparisons with Laura Marling’s second album ‘I speak because I can’ will be expected, but this comparison may become tiresome and overstated because ‘Virtue’ isn’t anywhere near as dark as ‘I speak because I can.’ And Juxtaposing themes of dinosaurs having sex and impending doom are missing from the Marling album.

The opening track ‘Dinosaur Sex’ is dually fun and dark, the acoustic guitar you expect is accompanied by a harrowing Radiohead-esque riff and an interesting use of instruments and tabla style drumming. Her voice is addictive as ever, but at the end of the day, the track is still titled Dinosaur Sex, so don’t take it too seriously. A mercury prize nomination may be in the offering for Emmy The Great this year, and she deserves one.
